The Plan |
The following is a writing unit that focuses on writing a news story. The unit incorporates the use of technology with the writing process. All activities focus on Language Arts and Technology TEKS.
This is intented to be a unit lasting two weeks.
Day 1: Research
Day 2: Interviews/Photos
Day 3: Survey
Day 4: Graph
Day 5-7: Writing News Story
Day 8: Presentation

Word processing program

Research |
Students will research Texas School Nutrition Policies using the internet. They will search for articles that discuss the policies. Students will take notes or print out articles. As they work, they will create a Works Cited Page to be turned in.

Interviews |
Students will generate a set of interview questions over the Texas School Nutrition Policy.
Students will choose three of the following persons to interview: teacher, lunchroom worker, community member, student, principal, or parent.
Students will have a digital camera available and a teacher generated permission slip available for taking photos of the persons that are interviewed to use in the news articles.

Survey and Graph |
Students will generate a set of question similar to the interview questions with multiple choice answers. Next, students will survey a set number of the student body. After the data is collected and complied, a graph will be created using a word processing program, such as Microsoft Excel. The graph is to be incorporated into the news article. |

Writing Process |
Students will use the information that they gained through the internet research, the interview, and their survey to write a news article about the Texas School Nutrition Policy. A rough draft will be generated first. Students will conduct peer editing using a check list. A final copy will be typed on the computer and graphics, digital photos and graphs, will be added. |

Presentation |
News Articles could be put together into a newspaper for the entire class to read.
The articles could be read as a news program and videoed to be shown to class.
