Hello, My name is Mrs. Shanna Lewis. I graduated from
DeLeon High School. I graduated from Tarleton State University with a bachelors degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with focus on early childhood, English, and Reading. I am certified to teach grades PreK-8th. Since that time I have completed my masters degree in Educational Administration. I am now certified as a principal and in English as a Second Language. I have taught at Maxfield Elementary for going on 13 years. The last eleven of which have been in first grade, the previous two were in fifth and sixth grade. It is a blessing to be able to have taught so many special children and have been able to meet so many wonderful families. I look forward to many more special years here in Gorman.
Our school year will be filled with an abundance of learning and fun. First graders are always busy learning and improving their skills in reading and writing. Each day we begin with a good book. This time of read aloud is a special time in our community of learners we are able to investigate the art of writing as we inspect what real authors do and also build reading fluency. We have a morning meeting and review math concepts after we share show and tell items and news. We then move on to Phonics and Reading.
Writer’s Workshop is next on our agenda with time for lessons on English, Penmanship, and Grammar. After lunch we have a second story time with Art as we move on into Math then Science/Health class which flows into P.E. and Music. Each week we also visit the library or work in the computer lab. The conclusion of our day is center time/reading circles/tutorials where a variety of hands on learning takes place to enhance our regular class work. During the day we always find time to incorporate music into are learning and end with a song as the bell rings each afternoon.
First Grade is a busy, exciting time in the life of a child. Many changes take place from learning to read to loosing that first tooth. I am pleased to be able to share this unique year in the life of your child with you. I will be sharing more news with you soon and look forward to being part of the team that helps your child
find success.
