Reading |
Reading in the kindergarten classroom is taught through guided reading and one on one reading. I will be using McGraw Hill reading and Primary Phonics. Reading Logs are sent home to help with practice once a child starts to show signs of reading readiness.
Guided reading is a small group of students reading in a leveled book with the guided help from the teacher. Leveled books with several copies of each are used. Groups are homogeneous, and focus depends on ability and development of group. Focus may be print, picture cues, letters, punctuation, tracking, rimes, etc..
One on one is teacher and student reading in an instructional reader. Instructional readers are from the series "Primary Phonics from Educators Publishing Service. Inc." Students start at their own level and continue to grow in reading at their own pace. Readers are also sent home in their reading log to read and record. |

Phonics |
In phonics, students are learning more about letter sounds and how to break up words into syllables in order to spell better. Students also learn to blend sounds and look for rules that letters follow when spelling. These letters and sounds are then practice in their instructional reader and taken home in reading logs to build fluency.
Through the year as we learn more about letters, students will be creating an alphabet book that they will bring home at the end of the year. Each student will need a one inch binder for this activity that has a plastic cover on the front for their title. |

Math |
Each morning we have a 'Math Meeting' which involves counting and manipulating numbers and money, updating the calendar and discussing months and days, shapes, colors, graphing, seasons, time, adding, subtracting, and many other math concepts. Our meetings are followed with centers and some skill sheets that involve applying what they have learned.
Monday through Thursday, students will bring a homework sheet that may require some parental involvement. Students are to return the homework each morning. No homework is given on Fridays.
Students will be taking an end of the year math test over the skills taught through the year. The homework will give parents an idea of what is expected of the students. |

Daily Oral Language |
Each day students participate in journal writing that has a certain topic. The topic will be connected with our reading series. Students will also spend time in a writing center each day that will allow them to use manipulatives to be creative and write about themes of their choice. |

Centers |
Each day students will participate in group activities in several centers. Centers include; computer, block/puzzle/science, math, writing, reading, home/paint/art/social studies, and listening/retelling.
Many of our centers include more than one academic concept. |
